Marietta beats cold-shooting Lady Dragons

PROCTORVILLE — There was a 1971 movie called “The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight.”

The Fairland Lady Dragons decided to make a sequel on Saturday.

On their worst shooting performance of the season, the Lady Dragons fell to the unbeaten Marietta Lady Tigers 61-48.

The Lady Dragons were 17 of 54 from the field for 31.5 percent and a mere 4 of 24 from the 3-point line for a mere 17 percent.

Marietta — ranked No.1 in Division 3 — took a 20-12 first quarter lead as the Lady Tigers got four 3-pointers. Alyssa Baker made a pair of the long shots while Jacey McKnight and Kendall Vanderwal also made 3-pointers.

Addison Godby scored 6 points for the Lady Dragons.

Marietta (20-0) extended its lead to 36-24 at the half as Brandon Kroft scored 6 points and both Jacey McKnight and Kendall Vanderwal each hit 3-pointers. McKnight scored 5 points in the quarter.

Ava Layne and Godby scored 4 points each while Addyson Cornell hit a 3-pointer and free throw for the Lady Dragons.

The Lady Dragons made a small comeback effort in the third quarter as they outscored Marietta 15-14.

Kamryn Barnitz drained a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points while Taegan Leep hit a 3-pointer and Bailey Russell scored 4 points.

Leigha Lauer and Vanderwal scored 5 points each with Vanderwal hitting a 3-pointer.

The Lady Tigers converted 5 of 6 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to halt any Fairland comeback hopes. Lauer scored 5 points including 3 of 4 from the line while McKnight had 4 points and was 2 of 2 at the line.

Godby scored 6 of Fairland’s 9 points in the quarter.

Godby had 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steal to lead the Lady Dragons.

Lauer scored 18 points, McKnight 14 and Vanderwal 11 for Marietta.
