Symmes Valley schools were closed on Thursday after a bomb threat was emailed to the school before classes even started for the day.

Superintendent Greg Bowman made the announcement on Facebook that

“early this morning one of our administrators noticed they had received an email with a bomb threat directed toward one of our school buildings,” the Facebook post read. “We immediately made the decision to initially go on a two-hour delay so that we could contact the authorities and thoroughly assess the situation. The local authorities were then notified, and after some additional discussion with staff, we decided the best thing to do would be to go ahead and close for the day.”

The post continued that the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office had cleared the campus for return to normal activity and thanked the sheriff’s office and other local authorities, including the Aid Fire Department and local EMS station for their help in clearing the property.”

“As of now, this situation is in the hands of the authorities, and rest assured that whoever is responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible,” Bowman said in the post.

Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless said that investigators “have submitted a subpeana to the email provider to find out the ISP address of the person who sent the threat. We are working to find out who sent the threat.”

Lawless said that although this threat against the school “appears to be a hoax, as most of them are, thank the Lord, we will continue to investigate and find out who did this.”

In most cases of threats made against a school that went to court, the person, whether a minor or adult, is charged with inducing panic, a fifth-degree felony or making terroristic threats, a third-degree felony.
