WAVERLY — Big time players make big time plays in big games.
And for Shaun Terry and Braden Schreck, it was showtime.
Terry — a.k.a. Mr Electric — was bottled up in the first half but explored in the second half and finished with 9 receptions for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Appropriately nicknamed “Bigs,” Schreck was 15-of-18 passing for 298 yards and 3 TDs as the Ironton Fighting Tigers routed the Harvest Prep Warriors 41-13 in the Division 5 Region 19 semifinals on Friday.
Ironton (11-1) will now play another big game as they face the Wheelersburg Pirates next Friday in the regional finals with a chance to advance to the Final Four.
The Fighting Tigers beat the Pirates 37-7 in the season opener. Wheelersburg downed West Muskingum 30-14 in the other regional semifinals. The site is expected to be at Portsmouth or Jackson.
Harvest Prep (9-3) struck quickly on the opening series of the game thanks to a 74-yard pass from Collin Boff to T.J. Sall on a third down play at the Warriors own 24-yard line.
Sall then scored on a fourth-and-goal from a yard out and Chaten Lutchman kicked the conversion at the 8:56 mark.
Ironton punted on its first series but then got the ball at its own 40 and went on a drive that came up short on fourth down at the 1-yard line.
But the Ironton defense stopped the Warriors at the 18-yard line and forced a punt. Austin Bump blocked the kick and Braylon Sturgill jumped on the ball in the end zone for a touchdown.
Beckham Waginger’s conversion kick tied the game with 8:53 in the second quarter.
Ironton took the lead for good with a 57-yard, 7-play drive capped by a 25-yard scoring pass from Schreck to Zayne Williams and it was 14-7 with 3:56 left in the half.
On Ironton’s second possession of the third quarter the Fighting Tigers went 64 yards in 7 plays with Schreck to Shaun Terry teaming up on a 40-yard pass and run for a score and a 21-7 lead at the 5:18 mark.
Ironton started a drive at its own 9-yard line in the third quarter and 13 players later Williams ran the final yards on the second play of the fourth quarter for a 28-7 lead.
But the Fighting Tigers weren’t done.
Schreck threw a pass 30 yards to Terry to cut and ran the rest of the way into the end zone to complete a 79-yard TD play and it was . A bad snap on the extra point resulted in an incomplete pass and a 34-7 lead.
The defense helped create the exclamation point for the win as Kayden Edwards came up with an interception. Edwards scored on the play but a penalty wiped out the score. However, a personal foul penalty on Harvest Prep put the ball at the 7 and Tyler Carmon ran 1-yard for the score and it was 41-7.
The Warriors managed to score against Ironton’s reserves on a 13-yard pass from Boff to Khalili Daniels that was set up on a 67-yard catch and run by Shavez Watkins.
Harvest Prep was limited to just 43 yards rushing including just 12 yards in the second half. The Warriors had 307 total yards thanks to 264 passing by Boff who was 14-of-33 with 3 interceptions.
The passing total was bolstered by a pair of completions covering 74 and 67 yards.
Harvest Prep won 20-14 last season but Ironton now holds a 3-1 lead in the series, all playoff games.
