What Ohio voters need to know ahead of Election Day

Published 12:41 pm Saturday, November 2, 2024

Election Day is Tuesday but over 2.2 million Ohioans have already made their voices heard through absentee and early in-person voting. Whether you have already voted or have plans to vote before 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, the following are some important items Ohioans need to know ahead of Election Day.

  • Go straight to the source for trusted Ohio election information –VoteOhio.gov.

The Ohio Secretary of State has established VoteOhio.gov as a one-stop-shop for everything voters need to make their voice heard in the upcoming election, including:

  • Finding your polling location
  • Looking up voting days and hours
  • Verifying voter ID requirements
  • Tracking an absentee ballot
  • Learning about support for voters with disabilities

Voters can also follow our social media platform, @VerifyOhio, for answers to frequently asked questions, explanations about key election processes, and impartial fact-checking of election-related topics.

  • Thank your local elections officials – and treat them with respect. Unlike other states, in Ohio each of our 88 county boards of elections, and every process involving a voter’s ballot, is managed under strict bipartisan oversight by local elections officials. This ensures Ohioans can have confidence in both the accessibility and security of the process. Ohio also has more than 40,000 Republican and Democratic poll workers who volunteer their time and talent on Election Day. Please remember to offer them a word of thanks for their role in protecting our democracy. Because of them, Ohio has truly become the Gold Standard for elections administration.
  • If you see something, say something. Our office, along with every county board of elections, works hard to provide every Ohioan with a secure and accessible voting experience. However, issues and concerns may arise over the course of Election Day. Voters who encounter problems or witness election misinformation/disinformation can report them by texting REPORT to 34262 or by calling 877-SOS-Ohio.
  • Ohio’s elections are secure. Our voting machines are never connected to the internet, nor are they capable of being connected to the internet. Voting equipment is rigorously tested before each election and every vote in Ohio is cast on a paper ballot. Additionally, a hand audit is performed after each election, along with countless other security practices. Voters interested in learning more about election security protocols can visit VoteOhio.gov for a variety of election security resources including an Election Security Overview and Security and Voter Education Toolkit.

• What to expect on Election Night: Polls close at 7:30 p.m., and county boards of elections will begin the tabulation of election results. Those results will be available on LiveResults.OhioSoS.gov. It’s important to note that all results are unofficial until the Official Canvass is completed and the election is certified by the Ohio Secretary of State (by law within 21 days of the election).
