SOUTH POINT — Brayden Hanshaw spent the last 3 years catching passes. This year, he’s been throwing passes.

Either way, he always seems to be able to catch on.

The two-time all-district wide receiver moved to quarterback this season and on Friday he was 16-of-25 passing for 205 yards and 4 touchdowns as the South Point Pointers downed the Symmes Valley Vikings 44-8 in a non-league game.

Running back Landon Vance also had a big game for the Pointers (1-3) as he ran 10 times for 84 yards and a touchdown and caught 5 passes for 98 yards and a score.

A total of 6 different players caught passes and Hanshaw even lined up at wide receiver twice as Ethan Hunt was 1-of-2 passing for 12 yards with a touchdown.

Symmes Valley lost to a third Ohio Valley Conference team this season and fell to 1-3. The Vikings managed just 119 total yards with 79 coming on the ground led by Will Jones who ran 8 times for 53 yards and a touchdown. He also caught 4 passes for 27 yards.

After a Vikings punt to start the game, the Pointers went 62 yards in 8 plays with Hanshaw scrambling to his right and hitting Vance on a pitch-and-run play for 24 yards and the touchdown and it was 6-0 at the 3:05 mark.

Kam Miller got one of his 2 interceptions on the next series but the Pointers were forced to punt. The teams again traded punts only a bad snap led to a blocked punt and the Vikings recovered the ball at the South Point 9-yard line.

Dylan Urban threw 3 yards to Gradee Holland and then Jones ran the final 6 yards to tie the game with 7:25 on the second quarter clock.

The Pointers answered with  an 83-yard drive lasting 8 plays that ended on a 10-yard scoring strike from Hanshaw to Davon Lewis with 3:55 left in the half.

South Point then recovered an onside kickoff at the Vikings’ 42 and scored 7 plays later on a 33-yard pass from Hanshaw to Levi Thornsbury. Corey Otzenberger caught the conversion pass and it was 20-6.

South P point fumble on its first play after the kickoff and the Pointers had the ball at the 12-yard line. Hunt hit Miller with a scoring strike on second down and it was 26-6 with 1:13 left on the clock.

Any hopes the Vikings had of a second half comeback were erased as Miller returned the kickoff 77 yards for a touchdown and it was 32-6.

The Vikings used a 54-yard punt to back the Pointers up to their own 21, but Hanshaw hit Vance in stride for a 60-yard pass play to the Vikings 19 and 2 plays later he found Otzenberger alone in the end zone for a 22-yard scoring play and a 38-6 lead with 7:49 left in the third quarter.

The Pointers got their final score when Vance broke free down the sidelines on a 64-yard run with 8:45 to play and it was 44-6.

The Vikings capped the scoring with a safety as they tackled the Pointers’ quarterback in the end zone with 1:11 left to play.

This Friday, South Point visits Rock Hill and Symmes Valley entertains West Union.
