Flyers overcome layoff to beat Tartans

The St. Joseph Flyers  haven’t played a game in 2 weeks due to rain last week plus a school trip that last 10 days.

On Monday, St. Joseph finally played again and it was just its fifth game of the season but the Flyers picked up a 16-4 Southern Ohio Conference win over the Sciotoville East Tartans.

“Being off that long you have to be concerned about how your team will react. But they played pretty well. We just need to play some games now,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.

The Flyers (4-1, 1-1) went up 3-0 in the first inning.

Landon Rowe reached on a dropped third strike, Mason Weber walked and both moved up on a double steal. Rowe scored on a passed ball and Weber came home when Evan Balestra doubled,

Drew Brown walked and Wesley Neal reached on an error as a run scored.

East got a run backing the bottom of the inning Cam Justice walked, Chris Escamilla singled and Bryton Lennex had an RBI single.

The Flyers erupted for 7 runs in the top of the second.

Carson Lyons doubled, Rowe and Weber walked. Lyons scored on a wild pitch, Balestra walked and Rowe and Weber both scored on wild pitches. Neal grounded out as a run scored, Brady “Quinn” Medinger singled and Jake Stephens had an RBI double.

Darryn Harvey was hit by a pitch and Lyons doubled home both runners.

East scored twice in the bottom of the frame to trail 10-3.

Lindon Williams walked, Tycyn Pernell singled and Justice doubled them home.

The Flyers got a run in the fourth when Medinger walked, stole second and third and came home on a passed ball.

East got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Pernell  and Justice walked, moved p on a passed ball and Pernell scored on a double steal.

The Flyers went up 13-4 in the top of the fifth.

Eli Whaley was hit by a pitch, Ian Whaley was safe on an error to put runners at second and third and Balestra delivered a 2-run double.

St. Joseph went up 16-4 in the top of the sixth.

Medinger walked, stole second and scored on a hit by Stephens who promptly stole second and third and scored on a hit by Harvey.

Harvey then stole second, went to third on a hit by Lyons and Eli Whaley hit a sacrifice fly.

The Flyers had 9 hits as Balestra went 2-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, Stephens 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI, Lyons was 3-3 with 2 doubles, Harvey 1-2 with an RBI, and Medinger 1-2.

Medinger went 3 innings to get the win as he gave up 5 hits, 3 earned runs with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. Neal worked 2 innings giving up 2 hits, an earned run with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. Lyons pitched a scoreless inning striking out 2 with no walks.
