Leona S. Fulks, 96, of Piqua, passed away early Thursday morning, April 11, 2024, at Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County Inpatient Unit, Troy.
She was born Feb. 10, 1928, in Kitts Hill, to the late Harve and Ethel (Kite) Simpson.
She married Glenn O. Fulks on Aug. 4, 1950; he preceded her in death on May 7, 2011.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Lyall “Sonny” (Mindy) Fulks, of Covington, and Glenna Fulks (Michael Girouard), of Piqua; two grandchildren, Matthew (Ali) Fulks, of San Diego, Calif., and Layne Fulks, of Houston, Texas.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Armour and Walter Simpson.
She is additionally survived by numerous nieces and nephews who recall the homemade jams and jellies that she would make for family gatherings and events, as well as fresh fruit pies and cobblers.
She is also remembered for being the historian in the family for her ability to recall every birth date, anniversary and other events.
Leona grew up in rural Lawrence County and was a graduate of Windsor High School, class of 1945.
She went on to attend Marshall University, completing a B.S. in education and began her teaching career in 1947 at age 19 at Fairland High School in Proctorville.
Within Lawrence County, she also taught at Waterloo and Symmes Valley High Schools, prior to moving with her family to Piqua in the summer of 1965.
She was a commercial business teacher at Covington High School until her retirement, rounding out a 37-year career.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and in her free time enjoyed knitting, quilting, crocheting, gardening, and baking.
Friends may visit with the family from 4-7 p.m. Monday at Moore Funeral Home, 10 S. High St., Covington.
Friends may also visit from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. 4th St., Ironton.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home in Ironton, with Pastor Dean Fulks officiating. Burial will follow in Rome Cemetery, Proctorville.
