Ashland, Ky. — Utility work will require the temporary closure of 10th Street between Greenup and Winchester avenues in downtown Ashland on Wednesday morning.

Beginning about 7 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, crews will close 10th Street from Greenup Avenue to Winchester Avenue to open cut the street and install a water line. The street will remain closed about five hours, with all 10th Street traffic detoured to 9th Street.

The street should reopen about noon.

The Transportation Cabinet has awarded a nearly $490,000 contract for three Highway Safety Improvement Program projects to create new dedicated left-turn lanes on Winchester Avenue, realign travel lanes at the 13th Street and Central Avenue intersection, and improve visibility of traffic signals at 13th and Ramey streets.

Work on Winchester Avenue is under way now as contractors rework some sections of sidewalk and move utilities so Winchester Avenue can be repainted from 12th Street to the Greenup Avenue intersection near the mall to create a central area for left-turn lanes at four intersections – 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th streets – while maintaining two through lanes each direction.

Motorists should note daily traffic changes, including lane closures, are possible. Please heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.

The work is part of a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet highway safety project.
