John Tipton

Dec. 28, 1960–April 4, 2020

John D. Tipton, 59, of South Point, died peacefully on April 4, 2020, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 28, 1960, in Ironton to his parents, Dan and Margaret Tipton of Stuart, Florida.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Marion and Mary Ann Melvin; and paternal grandparents, Daniel and Helen Tipton.

John was a businessman who operated the Southern Hills Best Western Motel.

He also owned and operated Best Storage and Kenova Boat Mart and South Point Citgo. Additionally, he worked at Steve’s Auto Parts.

John was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Marie A. Tipton, whom he married Aug. 16, 1980; son, John Ryan Tipton (Rachele); two grandsons, Thomas Ryan Tipton and Hunter Henson; one granddaughter, Abby Henson; sister, Denise Mitchell (Wayne) of Columbus; and a nephew, Brice A. Burkhardt.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point is assisting the family with arrangements.

Hazel Otworth

Hazel Louise Lavender Otworth, 88, of Franklin Furnace, went home to be with the Lord with her loving family surrounding her on Palm Sunday, April 5, 2020, after an extended illness.

Born to Mary Wright Lavender and Charles Oscar Lavender, both of whom preceded her in death, she was a lifelong resident of Franklin Furnace, where she supported her husband, Jesse, of 66 years of marriage and her three sons, Randy, Keith (Frieda Gleim) and Russell (Lisa Timberlake) as a wonderful wife and mother.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Geneva Lavender McGraw and Marie Lavender Walters; four brothers Albert (Shirley), Edward (Virginia), Charles (Betty) and Willie (Martha). She is survived by many other family members including Keith’s children, Jessica Dawn Stafford and her three children, son, Hunter (Kirsten Keizer) and their daughter Paisley; son, Colton, daughter Olivia, Keith Andrew Jr. (Kayla Mays) and their two children Wade and Cheyenne, Lisa Otworth’s son Joey and daughter Erica.

Hazel was very fond of Diane Derifield, who served as her caretaker throughout her illness. She also had a very special place in her heart for her “ladies club” including Betty Mullins, Esther Hart (who preceded Hazel in death) and Kristy Jones, her loving hairdresser.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday under the direction of Harrison-Pyles Funeral Home with the Reverend Roger Lavender officiating.

A celebration of Hazel’s life will be held at a later date for family, friends and acquaintances.

Houston Cook

Houston Andrew Cook, 20, of Huntington, West Virginia, died Tuesday March 31, 2020, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia.

Private family services will be held at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville. Burial will be in Union Ridge Cemetery, Huntington, West Virginia.

Cora Chaffin

Cora Louise Chaffin, 92, of Huntington, West Virginia, died Wednesday April 1, 2020, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia.

She is survived by her husband, Wesley Chaffin.

Private family services will be held at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville. Burial will be in Dock’s Creek Cemetery, Kenova, West Virginia.

Sylvia Javins

Sylvia D. Javins, 76, of Proctorville, died Thursday, April 2, 2020, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia.

She is survived by her husband, Cebert Javins.

Taaron Bowman

Taaron Daniel Bowman, 55, of Huntington, West Virginia, died on Tuesday March 31, 2020, at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia.

He is survived by his wife, Andrea Bowman.

Randall Salyers, 61, of South Point, died Saturday, April 4, 2020.
