LLOYD, Ky. — Playing near the Greenup Dam may have been an omen since it is a favorite fishing spot.
The Symmes Valley Vikings played at the Greenup County Musketeers on Saturday and as many fishermen have said, “you should have seen the one that got away.”
The Vikings led most of the game including by 6 points going into the fourth quarter. But this one got away as the Musketeers rallied in the fourth quarter and escaped with an 80-76 win.
The loss spoiled a career-high 26-point performance by the Vikings’ Logan Walsh who also had 8 assists.
Jack Leith had 17 points, 5 assists and 6 rebounds, Luke Leith 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals, and Drew Scherer 9 points 8 rebounds and 2 steals for the Vikings (14-7).
Greenup County (18-9) had three players in double figures as Rodrell Dryden with 23 poinits, Zander Carter 21 and Brady Nelson scored 18.
The Vikings jumped in front 23-16 in the first quarter as Luke Leith scored 10 points and Walsh had 7 points including a 3-pointer.
Nelson scored 8 points and Zane Carter and Dryden 4 each for Greenup.
The Vikings maintained their lead in the second quarter as Walsh drained two more 3-pointers and scored 8 points while Jack Leith had 7 points and it was 42-35 at the break.
Zander Carter knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 10 points in the quarter for the Musketeers.
Dryden was 4-of-6 at the line and scored 6 points and Zander Carter hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 more in the third quarter as Greenup creeped to within 60-54.
Walsh hit a 3-pointer and score 7 points while Scherer added 5 points as the Vikings kept the lead.
But in the fourth quarter, Dryden scored 10 points, Zander Carter scored 6 and Nelson made a 3-pointer and two foul shots as Greenup erupted for 26 points and rallied for the win.
Jack Leith scored 8 points with Luke Leith and Walsh scoring 4 each for all of the Vikings’ points in the quarter.
