Chesy girls advance in Division 3 sectional

LUCASVILLE — The Chesapeake Lady Panthers were in trouble, so they checked into their emergency ward.
Maddie Ward, that is.
Ward scored 17 points in the second half as she helped rally the Lady Panthers to a 52-45 win over the Leesburg Fairfield Lady Lions in the Division 3 sectional tournament on Sunday.
Ward finished with 29 points including 10-of-16 at the foul line.
Fairfield was had three players in double figures with Madison Bronner scoring 15 points, Emma Fouch 12 and Ella Newkirk 11.
The Lady Lions took a 19-11 first quarter lead as Newkirk hit a 3-pointer and scored 9 points while Bronner getting 6.
Fouch hit a 3-pointer and scored 7 points as Fairfield went up 31-21 at the half.
Ward knocked down two 3-pointers and scored 7 points with Blake Anderson hitting a 3-pointer to account for Chesapeake’s scoring.
Chesapeake began its comeback in the third quarter as Ward scored 7 points to cut the deficit to 40-33.
Ward hit a 3-pointer and scored 10 points and Emily Duncan got 4 more points as the Lady Panthers outscored Fairfield 19-5.
Anderson was 3-of-4 at the line and Ward 5-of-6 in the fourth quarter to prevent a Fairfield comeback as they began to foul as part of their strategy.
Chesapeake will now play Wheelersburg at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at Valley High School.
