HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Now that’s the Cory Borders the Coal Grove Hornets know.
Missing half the season with a dislocated kneecap and returning to action at about 75 percent, the Hornets senior guard has been trying to play his way back into shape.
Borders bombed in eight 3-pointer as he scored 30 points to lead a huge second half comeback by the Hornets as they beat the Huntington St. Joseph Irish 64-56 on Saturday.
Coal Grove (5-14) trailed by 13 points at the half but outscored the Irish 52-31 in the second half as Borders scored 27 of his total.
The game was tied 10-10 after the first quarter. Borders and Tait Matney hit 3-pointers for the Hornets while Zavion Johnson hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points and Jaylen Motley scored 4 points for the Irish (8-9).
Coal Grove managed just two foul shots in the second quarter while Motley and Johnson combined for 13 points to give St. Joseph a 25-12 halftime lead.
But then the Hornets got hot in the third quarter as they outscored the Irish 27-14.
Borders drained three 3-pointers, Malachi Wheeler knocked down a pair of triples and Matney scored 5 points as Coal Grove tied the game at 39.
Christian Lane scored 8 points and Motley 6 to account for the St. Joseph total.
Borders proved he was just heating up in the third quarter as he came back to bury four 3-pointers and make 6-of-8 free throw as Coal Grove outscore the Irish 25-17.
