The St. Joseph Lady Flyers’ final strategy was to foul, hope for a miss and then convert on the other end.
The Green Lady Bobcats did what you have to do to ruin that strategy, namely make the foul shots.
Green went 5-of-7 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to hold off the Lady Flyers 39-33 in a Southern Ohio Conference game on Thursday.
The Lady Bobcats (10-4, 7-2) led by just 3 points going into the fourth quarter and then went into a stall game midway through the quarter.
St. Joseph got within 37-33 on a 3-pointer by Emma Whaley with 1:18 to play, but Kasey Kimbler made two foul shots to seal the win for Green.
Besides Kimbler’s two free throws, Charlie Blevins was 3-of-4 from the line in the quarter.
Kame Sweeney had 4 points as Green took a 10-8 first quarter lead. Bella Whaley and Faith Mahlmeister had 4 points each for the Lady Flyers.
Each team scored just 4 points in the second quarter and it was 14-12 at the break.
The Lady Bobcats held onto the lead as they outscored the Lady Flyers 13-12 to lead 27-24 in the third quarter.
Kimbler scored 8 points including 4-of-4 at the line in the quarter and Sweeney added 4 more points.
The Lady Flyers had six different players score with Bella Whaley getting 3 points and Emma Whaley hitting a 3-pointer.
Mahlmeister had 11 points and 6 rebounds while Bella Whaley — who fouled out with six minutes to play — had 9 points and 8 rebounds. Kaitlyn Sheridan added 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
Kimbler scored 19 points including 9-of-10 at the foul line. Sweeney added 14 points as they accounted for 33 of Green’s total.
The biggest difference in the game came at the foul line. The Lady Bobcats made 15-of-21 free throws and the Lady Flyers were just 5-of-8.
St. Joseph host Portsmouth West at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and visits Western on Monday. Green host Sciotoville East on Monday.
