The St. Joseph Lady Flyers were on the move.
Moving the ball quickly on offense help create shots as the Lady Flyers beat the Portsmouth Clay Lady Panthers 46-30 in a Southern Ohio Conference game on Thursday.
“We played better tonight. We had a few too many turnovers but in the first half, but we really moved the ball well and got easy shots,” said Lady Flyers’ coach Bart Burcham.
“In the second and third quarters, we really kept them in front of us and guarded. And, we really rebounded tonight. Faith and Bella did a great job on the boards and Kaitlyn rebounded well from her guard position.”
Faith Mahlmeister and Bella Whaley each had a double-double for the Lady Flyers (4-2, 3-2). Mahlmeister got 12 points and 12 rebounds while Whaley had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Emma Whaley led the offense with 15 points while Kaitlyn Sheridan had 7 rebounds and 6 assists.
With just an 8-man roster, the Lady Flyers “Elite Eight” racked up 48 rebounds as a team.
Clay (1-8, 1-5) was led by Shaley Munion with 11 points.
St. Joseph got off to a decent start for a change and led 8-7 after the first quarter as Emma Whaley had 4 points.
Bella Whaley scored 6 points and Mahlmeister 5 as the Lady Flyers pulled away to a 23-15 lead at the break.
Emma Whaley hit a trifecta and scored 5 points while the defense held Clay to just 5 points and the lead was 31-20.
Mahlmeister and Emma Whaley scored 6 points each in the fourth quarter and Sheridan was 3-of-4 at the foul line.
Munion had 5 points and Sophia Gatti hit a 3-pointer in the quarter for Clay.
St. Joseph visits Fairview, Ky., on Monday.
