PEDRO — Rock Hill head coach Gordy Collins had his starting five, but he decided to draw another card from the deck and it turned out to be an ace.
Jacob Schwab came off the bench to score 16 points and help spark the Redmen to a 58-44 win over the Wellston Golden Rockets on Friday.
Braden Stamper was not only an ace but the trump card as he scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Redmen (1-1). Owen Hankins chipped in 8 points.
Cyan Ervin scored 19 points and R.J. Kemp added 11 for Wellston.
Brayden Malone and Stamper scored 4 points each and Caleb Davis hit a trey as Rock Hill took a 14-13 first quarter lead.
Ervin hit two 3-pointers and scored 8 points while Kemp had a triple and scored 5 more for the Rockets.
Schwab came off the bench in the second quarter and got 4 points and six different players scored and the Redmen extended the lead to 29-24 at the break.
It was Stamper and Schwab again in the third quarter as Stamper hit a trifecta and scored 7 points and Schwab had 6 more to give Rock Hill a 42-33 cushion.
Ervin and Kemp combined all 9 of Wellston’s points in the quarter.
Schwab got another 6 points, Hankins had a pair of baskets and Stamper was 6-of-8 at the foul line in the fourth quarter as Rock Hill continued to pull away.
Hunter Smith had 4 points and Rylan Molihan hit a 3-pointer for Wellston in the quarter.
The Redmen are at Green on Saturday at 3 p.m. and visit Chesapeake on Tuesday.
