WILLOW WOOD — What began as an event, planned on a whim and a desire to give back, is now in its third year of preparation. Santa at the Christmas Cabin is a fundraiser and celebration of fellowship held every winter in Willow Wood.
This year, the event will be from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Nov. 30.
Everything offered at the event is by donation and money raised from it is used to give back to those in the community who may not be as fortunate as others.
In its first year, the event raised right at $2,000 and the money was used to purchase items like food baskets, clothing, Christmas gifts and hygiene bags for local students.
This one-day event now takes months of planning and preparation by volunteers of all ages. Anyone willing to help out is more than welcome.
No one is ever turned down for a photo with Santa inside the historic cabin or a cart ride with the “reindeer” ponies, even if they cannot pay.
Inside the barn, you’ll find friendly animals and Mrs. Claus’s Kitchen, with food to warm the soul. The volunteers aim to show the love of Jesus by ensuring everyone has a wonderful Christmas and the basic necessities, plus a little extra, when possible.
The local volunteer fire department helps out each year, going as far as to use a fire engine to chauffeur Santa Claus himself to deliver gifts to deserving children.
This year, the goal is to put together more than 70 hygiene bags with necessary items and little items like nail polish or suckers.
Santa at the Christmas Cabin is at the Wilson Family Farm, 14552 State Route 775, Willow Wood. The event will take place rain or shine, as most of the things offered are indoors or under shelter.
