In the coming few weeks, three events are planned to honor veterans and to provide services to them.
On Thursday, Sept. 26, the annual Giving Back to Veterans Day event will return to Ironton Farmers Market Square, marking its third year.
Booths will be set up to provide information to veterans on services available to them.
In addition, there will be live music and a flag ceremony, as well as soup and beans provided free of cost.
More activities are being planned as the event, which runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., is finalized.
And in in Huntington, the Hershel “Woody” Williams Veterans Association Medical Center has two events planned.
A POW/MIA Recognition Day at will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20.
A “Missing Man” table ceremony will be presented by the VAMC’s honor guard, while an honor cordon will be stationed on the sidewalk prior to ceremony, saluting incoming guests and posting and retiring the colors.
The VAMC also wants to raise awareness to the epidemic of suicides among veterans and honor those lost.
As part of Suicide Prevention month activities, the VAMC will be hosting holding its second annual Suicide Aware and Remembrance 5k Saturday, Sept. 21. This will take place from 9 a.m.-noon at Ritter Park in Huntington
We are thankful the organizers are putting these events together.
Our veterans have sacrificed much and we, as a society, should always work to fill their needs.
We encourage everyone to spread the word.
