PEDRO — The Green Bobcats got themselves a really cool win.
The Bobcats overcame the cool temperatures to beat the Fairland Dragons 5-1 on Tuesday in the Rock Hill Wooden Bat Classic.
“Our pitchers weren’t as efficient as they normally are, but it was a cold night and both our pitchers battled pretty well,” said Green coach Dan McDavid.
“We got some timely hitting. Levi Singleton had two big hits for us that we needed. (Reilly) Sowards pitched a nice game for them.”
Green (1-0) had nine hits with Bryce Ponn going 3-4 with a double and a run batted in. Singleton was 2-4 with three RBI and Tayte Carver 2-4 with a double and RBI.
Fairland (0-1) had eight hits led by Kyle Rankin who was 2-4 with two doubles. Gavin Hunt was 2-4 and Tucker Adkins 2-3 with an RBI.
Green got two runs in the first inning.
Tanner Kimbler got an infield hit, Ponn had a two-out double and Singleton had a clutch two-run single.
The lead went to 3-0 in the third when Carver doubled and Ponn and Singleton both singled.
Ethan Carpenter was hit by a pitch to start the Green fourth. Pinch-runner Joe Webb stole second and scored on Carver’s base hit.
Fairland got its run in the top of the sixth with two outs on a double by Rankin and an RBI single by Adkins.
The Bobcats got the run back in the bottom of the inning.
Eli Webb reached on an error, took second on a ground out and came home on Ponn’s third hit.
The Bobcats will play Rock Hill at 7 p.m. Wednesday following the Fairland vs. Raceland, Ky., game as the Wooden Bat Classic concludes.
