Hornets slip past Panthers

CHESAPEAKE — Talk about your heavyweight fights.
The Coal Grove Hornets and Chesapeake Panthers went toe-to-toe on Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game that wasn’t settled until the final seconds.
Aaron Music hit a foul shot with four seconds left but missed the second attempt. Chesapeake got the rebound and Tylan Hutchison’s 3-point attempt near half-court hit off the front of the rim.
Cory Borders hit five 3-pointers and scored 22 points to lead the Hornets (13-5, 8-3). Music finished with 17 points and Jaylen McKenzie scored 14.
Chesapeake (12-6, 5-6) was led by Eli Archer with 18 points. Austin Jackson and Hutchison scored 11 each.
Borders hit a pair of 3-pointers as Coal Grove led 13-11 after the first quarter. Hutchison scored seven points including a 3-pointer.
The Panthers rallied to take a 29-27 halftime lead as Archer scored eight points. Borders hit three more 3-pointers.
The Hornets tied the game at 42 in the third quarter as McKenzie had six points and Music five. Nathan Cox and Jackson scored four each.
That set the stage for the fourth quarter as Music and Borders combined for 11 points. Jackson hit a 3-pointer and had seven points and Archer five.
On Friday, Coal Grove hosts Ironton and Chesapeake goes to Fairland. On Saturday, Chesapeake hosts Ironton and Coal Grove visits Rock Hill.
