SCIOTOVILLE — The St. Joseph Lady Flyers got “board.”
The Lady Flyers dominated the backboard with 41 rebounds as they beat the Sciotoville East Lady Tartans 50-12 on Thursday.
Laiken Unger pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Flyers while Bella Whaley had a huge game with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Faith Mahlmeister grabbed seven rebounds, Emilee Blankenship five and Lydia Sheridan four.
Emma Whaley scored 17 points for the Lady Flyers (4-6).
“The girls played hard. We hit the boards hard. I’m happier with the rebounding than anything,” said St. Joseph coach Bart Burcham.
“We couldn’t hit anything early but I told the girls to keep getting the good shots and they’ll start to fall and they did.”
St. Joseph took a 13-4 first quarter lead as Bella Whaley scored all but two of the Lady Flyers’ points in the quarter.
Emma Whaley took over for her cousin in the second quarter with 10 points and Mahlmeister had four points as the lead ballooned to 31-4 at the half.
Bella Whaley had four points and Emma Whaley was 4-of-6 at the foul line as St. Joseph stretched the lead to 41-6 and coasted in the final quarter as Kerri Jenkins and Unger had two points each.
Grace Smith had six points and Felicia Smith four to pace East.
The Lady Flyers visit Rose Hill next Thursday at 6 p.m.
