GARFIELD HEIGHTS — Don’t worry about the offense. Let’s play some defense.
Trailing by four points after the first quarter, the Fairland Lady Dragons’ defense went into shutdown mode as they beat the Parma Heights Holy Name Lady Green Wave 51-38 on Thursday in the Cleveland Clinic Holiday Tournament.
Holy Name took an 18-14 lead as Grace Abraham, Becky Styers, Myra Gibens-Nunez and Brooke Kowaski scored four points each.
Britney Thompson hit a pair of 3-pointers and Kelsey Warnock scored five points to keep Fairland close.
But in the second quarter, Warnock had six more points and Fairland held the Green Wave to only four points in taking a 27-22 halftime lead.
The Lady Dragons (5-2) continued to shut down the Green Wave by outscoring them 14-3 in the third quarter and the lead was not 41-25. Warnock had five points and Allie Marshall four account for nine of the 14 points.
Holy Name outscored Fairland 13-10 in the fourth quarter as Kowalski had seven points including 3-of-4 at the line. Marshall and Warnock had four points each in the quarter as Fairland kept the lead at a comfortable margin.
Warnock finished with a game-high 20 points with Marshall adding 12 points and Thompson nine on three 3-pointers.
Styers and Kowalski scored 11 each for the Green Wave.
The Lady Dragons play in the second day of the classic on Friday.
