CHESAPEAKE — The Chesapeake Panthers’ offense brought their A-game.
Unfortunately, the Portsmouth Trojans brought junior running back Talyn Parker.
Chesapeake racked up 407 total yards including 337 on the ground. But Parker ran 30 times for 343 yards and five touchdowns as the Trojans outscored the Panthers 55-39 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
“We contained the quarterback. We contained the fullback. We contained the wide receivers. We failed to do that with the Parker kid. That was pretty much the story,” said Panthers’ coach Andy Clark. “Parker’s a talent.”
Chesapeake (3-4, 1-3) had the ball inside the 20-yard line on three separate occasions and did not score.
“We had our chances to win, we just didn’t execute,” said Clark.
Portsmouth (4-3, 2-2) took a 7-0 lead on a 77-yard run by Parker with 7:21 left in the first quarter. Joe Bowling kicked the first of seven conversions.
The Panthers came back and scored on a 47-yard run by Will Todd and Brady Wilson kicked the extra point to tie the game at the 6:10 mark.
Parker did most of the work before quarterback Danny Lattimore scored on a 1-yard run with 50 seconds left in the first quarter and it was 14-7.
Todd had his own 1-yard touchdown run but the conversion failed and it was 14-13 with 8:39 on the clock.
Portsmouth went up 21-13 when Parker scampered 43 yards for the touchdown with 7:02 left in the half.
Todd went 13 yards for his third touchdown as Chesapeake got within 21-19 with 5:19 to go in the second quarter.
Parker’s 4-yard scoring run got the third quarter underway and it was 28-19.
But Donald Richendollar quickly closed the gap again as he returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and Todd’s conversion run made it 28-27 with 8:30 on the clock.
The Trojans again drove into scoring position with Lattimore sneaking in from a yard out and it was 35-27 at the 5:16 mark.
Kamren Harless got loose on a nice 32-yard touchdown run as the Panthers cut the deficit to 35-33 with 3:01 on the clock.
After Portsmouth fumbled the kickoff, the Panthers took their first lead when Harless had an 11-yard scoring run and it was 39-35.
Parker answered with a 19-yard touchdown run and the Trojans were back in front 41-39 with 7:21 left.
Chesapeake was driving but fumbled the ball away on a dropped pitchout and the Trojans recovered. Five plays later, Parker raced 35 yards for the touchdown and it was 48-39 with only 2:58 to go.
The Panthers failed to convert a fourth down that resulted in a sack at the 10-yard line. Lattimore ran 3 yards for the touchdown with 53 seconds left to set the final score.
Harless finished the game with 16 carries for 153 yardswhile Todd had 105 yards on 11 attempts. Richendollar had five kickoff returns for 215 yards.
Panthers’ quarterback Austin Browning was 4-of-8 passing for 70 yards — all to Tylan Hutchison.
Next Friday, Chesapeake visits South Point and Portsmouth hosts Fairland.
