Village council to consider appeal to variance
SOUTH POINT — The use of the former South Point Elementary School building will be the subject of a special meeting of village council on Tuesday.
An appeal hearing is set for 6 p.m. to discuss the request by Trinity Cheer & Dance to set up their business in the location, at 501 Washington St., which is zoned for residential use and certain types of businesses.
A request for a variance was filed by Joe Freeman, who owns the building, which was denied by village administrator Russ McDonald, as it was found not to meet the specifications.
Mayor Jeff Gaskin said he anticipates a high turnout for the hearing, which he said is to “hear from the neighborhood.”
“What do the people want?” he asked. “Let’s find out.”
Gaskin said each side will have 25 minutes each to present their case, followed by a 10 minute rebuttal from each. This will be followed by a motion from council on the matter.
Gaskin described his role as that of a “referee,” and said he does not vote on the motion, unless there is a tie.
The council will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m., following the hearing.
South Point Village Hall is located at 408 2nd St. W.
