Court hears drug, theft cases

More than half of the cases on Wednesday’s Lawrence County Common Pleas Court docket directly involved drugs.
• Samantha Cook, 37, of 12304 State Route 243, Chesapeake, pleaded guilty to illegal conveyance of prohibited items onto the grounds of a detention facility or institution, a third-degree felony, and possession of heroin, a fifth-degree felony. Judge Andy Ballard sentenced her to 18 months in prison with credit for 67 days served.
• Walter Gipson, 34, of 1304 W. Collins St., Flatwoods, Kentucky, previously pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony, trafficking in drugs (methamphetamine), a fourth-degree felony, and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, also a felony of the fourth-degree. Ballard set bond at $50,000 OR, and he is out on GPS home confinement until his next court date. Pretrial was set for May 30.
• Michelle Norris, 31, of 46 Township Road 111, Ironton, pleaded guilty to failure to appear, a fourth-degree felony, and in a separate case, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of drugs (methamphetamine), both fifth-degree felonies, and possession of drug abuse instruments, a second-degree misdemeanor. Ballard sentenced her to 15 months in prison with credit for time served, and ordered her to pay court costs.
• Sammy Scott, 32, of 3836 Logan St., Ashland, Kentucky, pleaded guilty to three counts of trafficking in heroin, all fifth-degree felonies. He is currently out on a $50,000 OR bond and GPS home confinement until his next court date. Ballard set pretrial for May 30.
• Derik Blankenship, 28, of 50 County Road 5, Kitts Hill, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of drugs (fentanyl, methamphetamine), one fifth-degree felony and one second-degree felony. Ballard sentenced him to three years in prison with credit for time served.
• Hollie M. Church, 35, of 4875 Sherwood Drive, Ashland, Kentucky, pleaded not guilty to possession of drugs (Oxycodone), a fifth-degree felony. Judge Charles Cooper continued a $3,000 cash or surety bond from lower court and set a $10,000 OR bond. Pretrial was set for June 6.
• James G. Lafon, 60, of 1245 28th St., Huntington, West Virginia, pleaded guilty to trafficking in drugs (methamphetamine), a fourth-degree felony. Cooper sentenced him to four years community-controlled sanctions (CCS) under intensive supervised probation (ISP) with 17 months reserved, and ordered him to complete STAR.
• Kimberly Strunk, 41, of 516 S. 10th St., Ironton, pleaded guilty to trafficking in drugs (heroin), a fourth-degree felony. Cooper sentenced her to 12 months in prison with credit for 60 days served. A specification for $343 was also forfeited in the case.
In other cases:
• Chanice Berry, 23, address unknown, admitted CCS violations. Ballard sentenced her to one year CCS extension and ordered her to complete treatment at Mended Reeds, 400 hours community service and pay court costs.
• Edward Holmes, 39, of 723 Mulberry St., Ironton, changed his plea from not guilty to guilty by reason of insanity. Ballard ordered him to be evaluated.
• Kimberly Johnson, 27, of 165 Township Road 1034, South Point, admitted CCS violations. Ballard continued her CCS and ordered her to complete STAR and pay court costs.
• Charles Riley, 30, of 203 Township Road 1430, Apt. A, South Point, previously pleaded not guilty to theft, a fifth-degree felony. A pretrial was set for May 30, where he will be given a final offer. If he declines the state’s final offer, trial is set for June 18 and 19.
• William Webb, 32, of 101 S. Ninth St., Ironton, admitted CCS violations. Ballard sentenced him to four years CCS under intensive supervised probation (ISP) with credit and 11 months reserved, and ordered him to complete STAR and 200 hours community service.
• Shane D. Egbert, 31, of 80 Township Road 184 W., Pedro, previously pleaded not guilty to two counts of theft, one fifth-degree felony and one first-degree misdemeanor, and domestic violence, a first-degree misdemeanor. Cooper set trial for June 18.
• Eric W. Roach, 40, of 3410 County Road 37, Scottown, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, a fourth-degree felony. Cooper sentenced him to 12 months in prison.
• Paul E. Walker III, 42, of 331 W. Sixth Ave., Huntington, West Virginia, admitted CCS violations. Cooper sentenced him to five months in jail.
