Flyers use fast start to cruise past Defenders

This game was over almost as soon as it started.
The St. Joseph Flyers raced to a 27-5 first quarter lead and cruised past the Ohio Valley Christian Defenders 63-36 on Tuesday.
Chase Walters had 10 points and four rebounds, Joey McDavid hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored with points, Clay Willis had four rebounds and three assists while Isaac Whaley had three assists as the starters played one quarter or a quarter and a few minutes.
“We played everyone and everyone scored,” said Flyers’ coach Rex Cooksey. “All the kids practice hard and they should get a chance to play and I get a chance to see. It was a good win.”
Bryce Gruber scored 16 points including four 3-pointers and Justin Beaver had 15 points to lead the Defenders.
Walters scored all his points in the first quarter, McDavid hit his two trifectas, Zach Roach drained a triple, Willis scored his five points and Whaley three for the 22-point lead.
St. Joseph went up 38-14 at the half as Jimmy Mahlmeister hit a 3-pointer and scored five points in the second quarter for the Flyers. J.C. Damron added a 3-pointer.
Beaver scored six points and Gruber hit a 3-pointer to account for the OVC scoring in the quarter.
Jackson Rowe hit two 3-pointers while Max Weber, Chase Wilds and Mahlmeister scored two each in the third quarter.
Gruber hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points in the quarter for the Defenders and it was 50-27.
Bryson Canter and Will Whaley each hit 3-pointers and Jared Johnson scored four points for the Flyers in the fourth quarter.
Beaver had four points and Maciah Swab three for OVC.
The Flyers hosts Rose Hill Christian on Thursday and New Boston on Saturday.
