SOUTH POINT — It’s tough to look right at something free and not take advantage of it.
The South Point Pointers did that on Tuesday as they made only 15-of-25 free throw attempts in a 59-57 loss to the Gallipolis Blue Devils in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
The Pointers also shot just 18-of-51 from the field for the game for 35 percent to go with the 15-of-25 foul shooting.
“You can’t shoot 15-for-25 free throws and expect to win,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise.
“We forced our shots in the first half. We didn’t shoot 3s in the second half but we didn’t make our free throws.”
Tayshaun Fox scored 35 points to lead South Point (3-5, 1-3). Fox has scored 97 points in his last three games for a 32.3 average.
Douglas Shaffer hit three 3-pointers for nine points while Austin Webb had seven points, four steals and three assists.
Zach Loveday scored 25 points and Cory Call added 12 for the Blue Devils (8-1, 4-1).
Call had six points as Gallipolis took a 13-11 first quarter lead.
Five different players scored in the second quarter for Gallipolis to take a 26-21 halftime lead. Fox scored all 10 points for South Point in the quarter.
Loveday — who was held to seven points in the first half — scored 12 points in the third quarter while Fox had 14 for South Point and the Blue Devils were up 48-42.
Fox scored seven points and he and Shaffer each hit 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, but South Point converted just 5-of-10 from the foul line.
Loveday had six points and Gallipolis also went 5-of-10 from the line in the quarter.
On Friday, South Point visits Ironton. Gallipolis hosts Washington Court House on Saturday.
