COAL GROVE — Queen and David Bowie are known for the song “Under Pressure.” The Coal Grove Lady Hornets are singing their own version.
Alexis Hall scored the 1,000th point of her career as she scored 26 points and the defense used its pressure to force turnovers and shut down the Lucasville Valley offense as the Coal Grove Lady Hornets routed the Lady Indians 61-31on Saturday.
“We have been trying to emphasize applying pressure early in the game and we did that today,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach. “We didn’t cause as many turnovers as we would have liked, but we did limit their second and third shots.”
Emily Compliment added 13 points and Kasey Murphy pulled down 12 rebounds in the Lady Hornets win.
Hall had seven points in the first quarter to give Coal Grove a 15-4 lead.
Hall scored 10 more points in the second quarter and the lead was 34-12 at the half.
“We started the game kind of slow. Valley is a very aggressive team. They have good size and some quick guards,” said Roach.
Compliment took over and scored eight points in the third quarter as the lead grew to 46-22.
“Compliment went down early with an ankle injury and they went to a box-and-one on Hall, but Emily came back with a fury,” said Roach.
Hall had seven more points in the fourth quarter including 4-of-4 from the foul line as Coal Grove continued to pull away.
“Dolen took advantage of her size when they mismatched a big girl on her and she got to the basket. (Lauren) Crum is recovering from an injury and played some hard minutes and provided some great defense. Guards (Addi) Dillow and (Bailey) McKnight applied pressure when needed and handled the ball,” said Roach.
Bre Call scored 13 points for Valley.
Coal Grove visits Portsmouth on Monday.
