PEDRO — There was good news and could be better news for the Rock Hill Redwomen.
Rock Hill gave a good performance in their season opener as they beat the St. Joseph Female Flyers 54-37 to give Todd Knipp his first career coaching win.
“We played with good effort and good energy,” said Knipp. “We still need to improve offensively and defensively.”
Lucy Simpson scored 14 points and Makayla Scott had 13 to lead the Redwomen. Kyleigh Noel added 10 points to the win.
Emma Whaley scored 13 points and Ashley Bartram 12 to lead the Female Flyers (0-1).
Rock Hill jumped in front 14-2 in the first quarter as Scott scored eight points and Noel four.
Each team scored 12 points in the second quarter and it was 26-14 at the half.
Simpson had the hot hand with eight points and Noel scored the other four in the quarter.
Faith Mahlmeister scored all five of her points including a 3-pointer in the second quarter for the Female Flyers with Emilee Blankenship, Bartram and Whaley each adding a basket.
The Redwomen put the game out of reach in the third quarter as they took a 47-20 lead. Maddie Scott scored all six of her points, Makayla Scott had five points including a 3-pointer and Simpson added four points.
Whaley scored nine points in the fourth quarter and Lauren Bush added four as St. Joseph outscored Rock Hill 17-7 in the fourth quarter.
Bartram had four points in each of the third and fourth quarters.
St. Joseph plays at St. Patrick in Maysville, Ky., on Friday while Rock Hill hosts Gallipolis on Monday.
