Ironton residents Antonio Murphy and Demetrius Givens have put together a Thanksgiving Canned Food Challenge and giveaway as an event of The Young Brilliantaires.
The Thanksgiving Canned Food Challenge is a competition between seven cities, which include Ironton, Portsmouth, Columbus, Huntington, West Virginia, Ashland, Kentucky, Lousia, Kentucky, and Cumberland, Maryland.
“It’s a competition to see which city can collect the most canned food,” Murphy said. “The canned food will be donated to food banks and pantries selected by the captain of the city running their drive.”
For Ironton, the food will be given out to Lawrence County residents who sign up for the giveaway.
Signups are from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the New Jerusalem Christian Center, located at 804 S. Eight St., Ironton. In order to sign up, residents must have a state photo ID, proving that they are a Lawrence County resident. The actual giveaway will be from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at the same location.
Murphy said the group has so far collected over 1,500 canned food items and that Gavin Harbolt, of the new car dealership in Ironton, Hometown Auto Sales, has donated 50 turkeys.
“We are just wanting to contribute to world hunger and help those in need to have a special Thanksgiving who can’t afford to have one,” Murphy said.
Food donations are being collected through Thursday, Nov. 16, and can be dropped off at 118 N. Sixth Street, Ironton.
