National attention is nice

Whatever your political views, it is good to see national politicians make appearances in this area after the election.

Many politicians are known to come to Appalachia before an election to rally their supporters and sway undecided voters their way. They often make promises and then they aren’t seen again until it’s time for re-election.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump held a rally in Huntington, West Virginia.

On Tuesday, Vermont Senator and Democratic former presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders, held a town hall at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth.

Neither had much to gain by being here since the next presidential election cycle isn’t until 2020.

Really, they were just here to get their respective message out to the public.

It probably would have served them better to go to a major city to rally.

But still, it’s nice to see that our small slice of Appalachia is getting attention from national politicians.

Maybe they will remember us when it comes to helping with the bigger topics that affect this area, like job creation and the drug epidemic.
