RUSSELL — The Russell viaduct in Greenup County reopened Friday morning after Kentucky Department of Highways crews finished repairs.
The viaduct was closed on July 25 so crews could replace deficient bridge-deck concrete in multiple locations along the roadway centerline. The repair work was necessary to protect motorists who use the bridge and to prevent further deterioration that could cause a long-term bridge closure.
The Kentucky Department of Highways is planning on replacing the bridge in the future. The design of the project is completed and is moving toward construction.
Repairs to the existing structure were scheduled this summer to avoid impacts to school traffic and to guard against bridge repairs or closures during winter.
