RUSSELL — The Russell viaduct (Kentucky Route 244 bridge) will remain closed for repairs again this weekend, Aug. 5-6, and through next week, the week of Aug. 7.
The closure was extended so Transportation Cabinet crews can replace deficient bridge-deck concrete along the Ky. 244 roadway centerline. Crews found a greater than expected amount of repair needs after they began patching pavement and assessing bridge damage in late July.
The repair work is necessary to protect motorists who use the bridge and to prevent further deterioration that could cause a long-term bridge closure.
The viaduct will be closed now through next week. Message boards will be used to communicate traffic restrictions and schedule changes. The bridge must remain closed overnight for concrete curing and because the pavement will be impassable at repair locations.
Motorists should use caution through the Ky. 244/U.S. 23/Ironton-Russell bridge intersection, follow signs and barrels marking lane closures, and use U.S. 23 and Ferry Street or other routes to detour.
The repair work is necessary to extend the life of the bridge – a replacement project has been designed and is moving toward construction. Repairs were scheduled now to avoid impacts to school traffic and to guard against bridge repairs or closures during winter.
