CHESAPEAKE — Motorists in Chesapeake last week may have noticed the work of a group of local citizens who were working to bring awareness to the dangers of heroin use.
Interim police chief Randy Lewis said he was approached by Dwayne Woods, who works with a recovery group in Huntington, about the issue.
“He asked us if they could put on a static display to raise awareness,” Lewis said. “And we said ‘That would be great.”
A hearse and Grim Reaper were erected near village hall on Friday as part of the display, while about 15-20 people rotated in shifts, holding signs for about six hours.
“A lot of them were from a recovery house in Huntington,” Lewis said.
Lewis said Woods’ mission is to raise awareness.
“He’s dedicated his life to it and to helping people,” he said.
Lewis said many of the signs were donated by employees of Big Eagle, while he donated materials as well.
He said the group is planning for another event in Chesapeake’s park at a future date, which will allow people to discuss the issue.
Details will be announced on Wodds’ “Heroin Hearse” Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/RejectHeroin, Lewis said.
