ASHLAND — The second annual Highlands Museum and Discovery Center First Responders Camp is set for July 11 through July 14 for students entering fifth through seventh grades, and spaces are still available.
The camp is put on through a partnership with the museum and the Ashland Police Department, Ashland Fire Department, Boyd County EMS, Boyd County 911 and Boyd County Emergency Management.
The camp will give participating children a fun, hands-on glimpse of what it is like to be a first responder.
“We’re super excited to be putting this camp on again this year. Last year it was really a hit and the kids loved it,” Emily Roush, education and marketing director for the museum, said. “It’s a really great and unique learning experience.”
During the first few days of the camp, the participants will go through planned activities and exercises with each department, learning about the day-to-day activities and procedures each goes through. The final day of camp, the museum will set up a final activity with each participant taking the role of one of the departments to handle the situation.
Roush said on the final day of the camp last year, a DUI crash was set up with a dummy, and the participants had to show what they had learned leading up to it.
“Fifth through seventh grade is when kids begin to start thinking about what they might want to do in the future, so it’s a good age for this camp,” Roush said. “And on the final day, we invite the parents to come and see what all their children have learned.”
The camp is from 9 a.m.-noon each day at the Fire Training Drill Tower, located on Front Street in Ashland. The cost for the four days is $20, and there’s a maximum capacity of 25 children who must be registered to participate. Roush said currently there are about nine spaces left to fill.
