DECATUR TOWNSHIP — A head-on collision near the 17-mile marker on State Route 93 closed the area of the road around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, but no serious injuries were recorded.

A green 1998 Pontiac Grand Am, driven by Emma Scherer, 21, of Ironton, was heading southbound attempting to pass a tractor-trailer at the end of a passing zone when she reached the double yellow line just before a blind curve and collided with another vehicle.

The vehicle Scherer hit was a 2016 Lexus SUV, driven by Dana Johnson, 39, of Ashland Kentucky, who also had her two children in the backseat, James Johnson, 12, and Madison Johnson, 8.

The collision pushed Johnson’s vehicle into the tractor-trailer, which was driven by Lynn Hornsby.

Everyone except Hornsby was transported to Cabell Huntington Hospital, with James Johnson being taken in a helicopter.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Jacob Gay said he didn’t currently have exact speeds, but from statements, Scherer and Johnson were traveling about 50 mph, while Hornsby was traveling at about 40-45 mph.

Decatur Township Fire Chief Gene Cox, who was on scene, said that Johnson’s Lexus had an OnStar system through its Sirius XM radio that alerted 911 immediately as soon as the airbags went off.

Responding to the accident were the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Decatur Township Fire Department, Elizabeth Township Fire Department, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation and an accident reconstruction team.

The road was re-opened at about 7:49 p.m. Monday.
