SOUTH POINT — Coach Travis Wise is certain that the Aerosmith song “Sweet Emotion” could only refer to the pre-game.
The Pointers honored their seniors Max Tabor, Elijah Adams, Drew Adams, Cody Runyon and Logan Wade before Friday’s Ohio Valley Conference game, but those emotions still lingered as the game began.
Once the Pointers collected themselves, they were able to pull away in the second half to a 70-51 win over the Rock Hill Redmen.
“After we got through emotions of senior night we settled down.,” said Wise.
“We came out in the second half with more energy and got a little bit of a run. We jumped on them pretty quick. We came out and did what we had to do.”
Tayshaun Fox scored 19 points to go with six assists and three steals to lead the Pointers (13-9, 8-6). Elijah Adams had 16 points and four assists, Runyon hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points while Wade had eight rebounds and two steals.
Tim Adkins drained five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Redmen (3-19, 0-14). Mason Darby scored 13 points and Jaret Bacorn added eight points.
Wise admitted he was concerned about the defense giving up six 3-pointers.
“We have to get a little better locating the shooters. We lost (Adkins) a couple of times and he made us pay for it,” said Wise.
South Point led 14-12 after the first quarter. Caleb Eplion came off the bench to score six of his nine points as the Pointers took a 29-25 halftime lead.
The Pointers came out in the second half and outscored the Redmen 21-14 to stretch the lead to 50-39.
Fox then scored nine points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Both teams will now play in the Div. III sectional tournament at Jackson on Wednesday. Rock Hill plays Wheelersburg at 6:15 and South Point faces Wellston at 8 p.m.
