St. Joseph coach Nick Miller was afraid his team would come out flat. Instead, the Female Flyers blew it up.
St. Joseph had a big first half en route to a 53-20 win over the Ohio Valley Christian Lay Defenders on Monday.
“We came out early and played well. I was worried we’d come out flat and then we made a basket and started to press and that helped get us going,” said Female Flyers’ Nick Miller.
“Megan (Riley) did a nice job for us on the offensive end. It was a good team effort.”
Riley had 15 points including three 3-pointers to lead the Female Flyers (9-10). Morgan Turner hit three 3-pointers to go with three assists, and Kaitlyn Sheridan had three assists and three steals.
St. Joseph had 36 rebounds as Ashley Bartram had eight, Ashlee Blankenship seven and Alyson Johnson five.
Turner hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter as St. Joseph took an 11-6 lead. Rachel Sargent scored all four of her points for OVC.
Riley hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Female Flyers held OVC scoreless and took a 31-6 halftime lead.
Riley had four points in the third quarter to offset five points by OVC’s Cari Hutchison as the lead went to 39-11.
Six different players scored for the Female Flyers in the fourth quarter as they added to their lead.
St. Joseph hosts Hannan at 6 p.m. on Wednesday for senior night and then travels to Parkersburg (W.Va.) Catholic at 7 p.m. on Friday.
