COAL GROVE — Taking a break is good for the body but it’s also good for the mind.
A halftime break helped the Coal Grove Lady Hornets physically and mentally as they used a big third quarter to beat the Rock Hill Redwomen 59-42 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Wednesday.
Coal Grove led by just one point at the half, then outscored Rock Hill 20-2 in the third quarter to take control of the game.
“We came out a little flat in the first half, we made some adjustments at halftime offensively and defensively and took control of the game,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“(Rock Hill) coach (Greg) Damron does a great job preparing his team and scouting us.
Five different players scored for Rock Hill while Destiny Dolen of Coal Grove had six points and the game was tied 13-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Emily Compliment scored nine points in the second quarter to offset a pair of 3-pointers by Rock Hill’s Jill Hairston and the Lady Hornets were up 26-25 at the half.
“Compliment continues to draw a lot of attention from defenses. We have been telling her to just deal with it and play hard and she did with a career scoring night,” said Roach.
Bailie McKnight hit a couple of 3-pointers and Compliment scored 10 points as Coal Grove opened up a 46-27 lead. Abbi Kline had Rock Hill’s lone basket.
“McKnight stepped up and knocked down some 3s. Dolen was doing a great job early when Compliment was getting the extra attention. I asked (Kasey) Murphy to make me a promise before the game that she would give me everything she had and she did,” said Roach.
Maddie Scott scored 10 points as Rock Hill outscored Coal Grove 15-13 in the fourth quarter. McKnight had five more points for the Lady Hornets including a 3-pointer.
Compliment finished with 25 points, McKnight scored 13 and Dolen 12 for Coal Grove (9-5, 4-3).
Murphy had eight rebounds and two steals, Dolen had seven rebounds, five assists and three steals, and McKnight had four steals.
Scott had 15 points and Hairston 12 for Rock Hill (6-7, 2-5).
In league games on Thursday, Coal Grove hosts South Point and Rock Hill visits Fairland.
