COAL GROVE — Second verse, same as the first.
The Coal Grove Hornets and St. Joseph Flyers met for the second time in three weeks and not much changed but the final score.
In another fiercely fought game, the Hornets came away with a 56-48 overtime win on Friday.
“It was a good tough game, just like the first one. This one went down to the end like the first game,” said Flyers’ coach Rex Cooksey. “We battled and scrapped all the way.”
Cole Gannon scored 14 points and Aaron Music had 11 to lead the Hornets (5-2).
St. Joseph (2-5) was led by Zac McGraw with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Chase Walters had 12 points and 10 rebounds while Tre Neal got 13 points and 6 assists.
Neal scored 5 points and Walters 4 in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 13-10 lead. Jordan Case and Music had 4 points each in the quarter for the Hornets.
Gannon hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter as Coal Grove outscored St. Joseph 15-12 to take a 26-25 lead at halftime. Neal scored 6 points in the quarter for the Flyers.
McGraw scored 5 point as the Flyers tied the game 35-35 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Coal Grove was up 42-39 when the Flyers’ Isaac Whaley buried a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left to tie the game.
Coal Grove had two chances to win the game in regulation but couldn’t connect.
The Hornets had a two-point lead early in the overtime when Gannon hit another 3-pointer and the lead was not five and the Flyers couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Gannon scored 6 points in the quarter.
“They hit some big shots, we hit some big shots. It was a good high school basketball game. I told the kids to keep working and to keep getting better,” said Cooksey.
On Tuesday, Coal Grove visits Fairland and St. Joseph hosts New Boston.
