PEDRO — The Fairland Dragons did just one thing wrong, and it still wasn’t enough to stop them.
The Dragons struggled with their shooting early but still managed to pick up an easy 59-26 Ohio Valley Conference win on Tuesday over the Rock Hill Redmen.
“We played well and we played hard, we just didn’t shoot well,” said Fairland coach Nathan Speed. “We had the energy and we played well defensively. But Rock Hill played well.”
The Dragons were 27-of-61 from the field for 44 percent and just 2-of-16 from the 3-point line.
Rock Hill (1-3, 0-1) shot ever worse. The Redmen were 10-of-45 for only 22 percent. They made a mere 1-of-16 from the 3-point line.
“We knew coming in that Fairland could hurt us in so many ways,” said Redmen coach Sam Gue. “I don’t think I realized just how good of a transition team they are, though. Coach Speed has done a great job of creating an atmosphere of pressure from one end of the court to the other.”
Isaiah Howell had 12 points and 4 steals for the Dragons. Kollin Van Horn got 11 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocked shots while Keedrick Cunningham added 11 points and 5 rebounds.
Mason Darby had 7 points and 5 rebounds while Tyler Damron added 6 points for Rock Hill.
Fairland (3-0, 1-0) took a 15-10 first quarter lead as Short scored 5 points.
Howell had 8 points in the second quarter as Fairland opened up a 39-19 halftime cushion.
Cunningham scored 7 points in the third quarter and Fairland held Rock Hill to just two points and it was 56-21.
“I’ll say one thing about our guys, there is absolutely no quit in them and they are eager to work. “We know we are going to have to be prepared to play a much improved Gallia team on Friday,” said Gue.
In OVC games on Friday, Fairland hosts Ironton and Rock Hill visits Gallipolis.
