PEDRO — Trailing at halftime, Rock Hill coach Greg Damron made one very simple adjustment: defensive attitude.
Damron said the adjustment wasn’t hard to figure out and the Redwomen listened to his words as they outscored the New Boston Lady Tigers 37-15 in the second half en route to a 52-42 season-opening win on Saturday.
“The only halftime adjustment was to move your feet and play better defense,” said Damron. “We didn’t rotate on defense. We came out in the second half and played really aggressive on the defensive side and that was the difference.”
Maddie Scott had 21 points including 18 in the second half to lead Rock Hill. She also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Anna Darby posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Taylor Hall and Jill Hairston had five rebounds each.
“Maddie Scot got going in the second half and that was a key. And we shot well from the foul line which always helps,” said Damron whose team was 18-of-27 from the line for the game and committed just seven turnovers.
New Boston was led by Tammy Oiler with 20 points including six 3-pointers.
The Lady Tigers took a 9-6 lead in the first quarter with Darby getting all of Rock Hill’s points.
New Boston extended the lead to 26-15 at the half.
But Scott had six points in the third quarter as Rock Hill rallied to get within 34-33 and then she got 12 more in the fourth quarter as the Redwomen outscored New Boston 19-7.
Hall was 3-of-5 and Hairston 2-of-2 from the line down the stretch for the Redwomen.
Rock Hill visits Fairview, Ky., on Monday.
