ASHEVILLE — Alex Gillette is the one and only.
The Coal Grove Lady Hornets’ junior golfer earned a trip to the state tournament as the only qualifying individual player at the Division II girls’ district tournament at the Upper Landsdown Golf Course on Tuesday.
The top team and the top individual not on the qualifying team advances to the state tournament. Waterford had the top three individual finishers and won the team title.
Gillette posted rounds of 46 and 43 for an 89 to finish fourth overall and first among individual qualifiers.
Gillette was just three shots behind medalist Abigail Eichmiller of Waterford and two off the pace of McKenzie Dietz and Ashley Offenberger, also of Waterford.
Fairland Lady Dragons’ freshman Hanna Shrout tied for 19th place with a 109 total on rounds of 54 and 55.
The Division II state tournament will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15, at the Ohio State University Gray Course.
