BURLINGTON — Lawrence County voters will get a chance to hear from candidates for county and local races at a Meet the Candidates event, organized by the Concerned Citizens of Burlington, on Thursday.

Ed Moellendick, the group’s president, said the event will take place at 6 p.m. at Burlington Elementary.

“It will be mostly local races,” he said. “The county commission, treasurer, recorder, clerk of courts and others.”

Moellendick said the format of the event will include presentations from each candidate, followed by a question and answer session.

Afterward, a reception will be held, with food and refreshments.

“The voters can come and mingle with the candidates,” he said.

In addition, Moellendick said voters will hear presentations on two issues on the ballot for the Burlington area.

A member of the fire department will speak regarding a fire levy, while Carlos Ortiz, the owner of Casa Grande restaurant, will make the case to voters in precinct No. 3 to allow alcohol sales at the restaurant.

Moellendick said the gathering will also hear from Shirley Dyer, director of the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, who is chairing the county’s bicentennial committee.

She will speak on the anniversary, while T-shirts marking the occasion will be sold and a raffle will be held for commemorative rifles.

Moellendick said the Meet the Candidates event has taken place for every election since he joined the Concerned Citizens more than 30 years ago.
