An event aimed at educating senior citizens about the dangers of falls is set for Sept. 22 at the Ironton Farmers Market.

Ten Million Steps to Prevent Falls is a national campaign and the Ironton Health Department is organizing a local part of the effort, Laura Brown, the city’s health commissioner, said.

“We’re hoping to educate older Ohioans and stop the epidemic of falls,” she said.

She said in addition to the educational efforts, there will be booths catering to the needs of seniors.

“We’re hoping to have vendors with equipment that would be available to seniors,” she said. “We’ll have a blood pressure station set up, an attorney who will be giving out advice on living wills and medical power of attorney, and a company to talk about health insurance. We’ll also have ice water, nutritious snacks and fresh fruit.”

The highlight will be the registration for people to walk the 2,000 steps of a mile, she said.

“We’ll send those numbers to Columbus where they will be calculated with the state results,” she said, noting that, last year, Ohio recorded 13 million steps taken.

Brown said the local health department took the lead in organizing and has several sponsors lined up to help.

The event is set to start at 11 a.m. and run through the lunch hour until 2 p.m.
