Leniel Harbers

Nov. 11, 1934 — April 18, 2016

Leniel H. “Len” Harbers, 81, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Monday, April 18, 2016, at the Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas.

He was born on Nov. 11, 1934, in LaGrange, Texas, the only child of Henry B. and Helen (Krueger) Harbers.

On Oct. 13, 1978, he was united in marriage to the former Carole Ann Zimmerman of Ironton. She survives of the home. Also surviving are two daughters, Julia Harbers-Browning, of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Sarah Harbers, of LaGrange, Texas; and a granddaughter, Sadie Jane Pierson, of Phoenix, Arizona.

After graduation from LaGrange High School, Len attended Texas A&M College, earning his B.S. in animal science in 1957 and his M.S. in biochemistry and nutrition in 1958. During his freshman year at A&M, he was a member of the Core of Cadets band, playing both trumpet and bugle. He earned his Ph.D. at Oklahoma State University in animal nutrition in 1961. He did postdoctoral work in nutritional pharmacology at the University of Chicago (1961-1963) and was an associate chemist for the American Meat Institute Foundation in Chicago (1963-1964).

Len was a professor with the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry at Kansas State University from 1964 until his retirement. In addition to teaching and research, he served on numerous academic committees, was a member of several honorary societies and published numerous refereed scientific journal articles. He also participated in several foreign assignments, spending time in Nigeria, Bulgaria and Paraguay. Len was active in the Kansas-Paraguay Partnership (Partners of the Americas) and served as vice president and president.

Outside his professional career, he was a member of the Kansas City BBQ Society and judged in numerous BBQ contests throughout Kansas and Missouri. In recent years, he attended the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by one daughter, Jennifer Jane Harbers.

David Daniels

Oct. 31, 1940 — April 27, 2016

David L. “Dave” Daniels, 75, of South Point, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. The Lawrence County native was born Oct. 31, 1940, a son of the late Mart and Etta (Spaulding) Daniels. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judith “Judy” Hostler Daniels, whom he married Oct. 12, 1963.

Mr. Daniels was a 1959 graduate of South Point High School and a United States Army veteran. He retired in 1992 with 30 years of service at Chrysler Company in Dayton. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ervin, Henry and Jarvis Daniels; and sister, Loretta Daniels.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Shari (Bryan) Sturgill, of Kettering and Terri Northern, of Bellbrook; son, Lowell (Mary Lou) Murdock, of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia; grandchildren, Amanda and Emilie Sturgill both of Kettering, Jordan Northern, of Kettering,, Ryan Northern, of Columbus, Kalee Northern, of Bellbrook and David Murdock, of West Virginia; sister, Helen Schmalstig, of North Carolina; three brothers, Cecil (Mary) Daniels, of South Point, Howard Daniels, of Kettering and Earl Daniels, of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be noon Saturday at the Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home with pastor Phillip Fannin officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery with military rites provided by VFW Post 8850. Friends and family may call from 10 a.m. until time of the service Saturday. A special Thank You to Community Hospice of Ashland and their friends for their help during Dave’s illness. Lena Stevenson

Lena Francis Stevenson, 91, of Chesapeake, died Thursday, April 28, 2016, at home. Funeral service will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, by pastor Greg Tomlinson. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Justin Thompson

Justin Randall Thompson, 28, of South Point, died Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia. Funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, by pastor Chuck McCormick and Al Black. Burial will follow in Rome Cemetery, Proctorville.
