COAL GROVE — Double Duty Douglas.
Douglas Shaffer pitched a six-hit complete game and also doubled twice with three runs batted in to lead the South Point Pointers over the Coal Grove Hornets 4-2 on Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Shaffer stuck out seven and did not walk a batter in getting the win.
Daniel Rutherford pitched well in a losing effort. He also gave up six hits, struck out six and didn’t walk a batter but he did hit one.
“We didn’t play bad, but South Point played well. Shaffer threw a good game and (Chris) Woodard did real nice job at shortstop,” said Hornets’ coach Dean Mader.
South Point broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth inning.
Tanner Hall and Drew Adams reached on errors to begin the inning. Two outs later Shaffer helped his own cause with a two-run double.
Coal Grove tied the game in the fifth on singles by Isaac Howard, Chase McKnight and Jacob Clark.
But the Pointers scored twice in the sixth.
Hall and Adams singled and Christian Pritchard and Brycen McCann both put down sacrifice bunts to score the third run. Shaffer added some insurance with an RBI double.
Shaffer retired the final seven batters he faced to preserve the win.
Jacob Clark went 2-3 for the Hornets (2-5, 0-5).
On Friday, Coal Grove visits Chesapeake and South Point hosts Fairland.
