Kicks off annual Week of the Young Child
SOUTH POINT — Students at the Lawrence County Early Childhood Academy got a special performance on Monday.
The bell choir from the Open Door School paid a visit to the preschool for music appreciation day, as part of the Week of the Young Child activities.
The choir performed “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and “It’s a Small World,” which were conducted through a series of flash cards instructing the children when to ring their color-coded bells.
Following the performance, the choir handed their bells off to the audience to let them try a song.
Tim Nunnery, the public relations director for the Lawrence County Board of Developmental Disabilities, said the week is an annual celebration hosted by the National Association for the Education of Young Children to celebrate early learning, young children, their teachers and families.
There are several events scheduled for this week, such as Transportation Day on Wednesday, and Thoughtful Thursday in which the school will visit nursing homes to hand out crafts.
“Every day, we do something different, so that the kids can be interested and learn from it,” he said.
Nunnery said the school has students from ages 4 to 6 in integrated classes.
“Some have developmental disabilities, and some are typical peers,” he said.
