Hard work pays off.

The St. Joseph Female Flyers got the winning goal in the final minute as they took a 4-3 hard-fought soccer win over the Waverly Lady Tigers on Monday.

“This was a really hard-fought game by both teams. Our girls had to really play well to get the win,” said St. Joseph coach Kyle Weatherholt.

“Waverly has a strong team with good athletes all over the field. They play well together and have a very organized defense.”

St. Josephs’ Ophelia Weatherholt took a corner kick and found Kaylee Sheridan who scored the winning goal with one minute to play and snapped a 3-3 tie.

Lynsey Booker got St. Joseph off to a fast start as she scored two goals during the first 10 minutes of the game. Emma Saxby had an assist and the other goal was unassisted.

Waverly got a goal to trail 2-1 at the half.

Saxby then got behind the defense and scored thanks to a well-placed pass by Booker and the lead was 3-1 early in the second half.

Waverly came back with two goals to tie the game but the Female Flyers were able to get the win with their last-minute goal.

“It was an exciting final 10 minutes with both teams working hard to get the winner,” said coach Weatherholt.

St. Joseph plays at Wheelersburg on Saturday.
