With the start of another school year nearing, families with students will have opportunities to receive school supplies through giveaways that are happening on Saturday.
For Fairland district families, the New Hope United Methodist Church will continue its tradition of giving away school supplies from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the church.
“We collect supplies and monetary donations to use for buying supplies,” Robin Ross, volunteer from New Hope United Methodist who helps with the giveaways, said. “Each student gets a backpack filled with school supplies that they need.”
Ross said last year around 190 students were helped and that the event has grown every year of its near decade long run.
“We start collecting money in May and throughout the summer to get the supplies,” Ross said.
New Hope United Methodist Church is located at 111 Township Road 1130 near Hall Funeral Home.
Another giveaway on Saturday is hosted by the churches of South Point and will be in the South Point Food Fair parking lot, located at 409 Solida Road, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
“The churches are doing this as a group this year for the first time,” Terry Wagner, pastor of the Tri-State Worship Center at The Point, said. “We’ve prepared 1,000 backpacks, so I’m hoping we’ll be able to give that many out.”
Wagner said the giveaway targeted students of the South Point district, but that other students won’t get turned down.
“We’re inviting anyone that wants to come,” Wagner said. “If we have enough, we will give them out.”
Also at the South Point giveaway, there will be a dunk tank, inflatables, food, face painting and super heroes and princesses.
