Dragons offense comes to life in twinbill sweep of West

WEST PORTSMOUTH — When it comes to the lost and found department, the Fairland Dragons went to the “found” window.

After struggling offensively in two losses to begin the season, the Dragons collected 25 hits in a doubleheader win over the Portsmouth West Senators on Saturday, 14-0 in five innings and 15-14 in the second game.

“We got the bats out. We didn’t do that the first two games of the year,” said Fairland coach Bryan Ward.

Trace Adkins and Tyler George were 5-for-6 and Collin Damron 4-7 with a triple, a double and eight runs batted in on the day to lead the Dragons’ offense.

Scheibelhood 3-5 and four RBIs, Dylan Murphy 2-6 with two RBI, and Brett Curry 2-5.

In the first inning, Fairland snapped a scoreless tie in the third inning.

Seth Clay was hit by a pitch, Adkins singled, George got a bunt single to load the bases, and Damron walked to force in a run. Perry was hit by pitch, Murphy hit a sacrifice fly and Scheibelhood singled in a run.

The Dragons erupted for 10 runs in the fourth inning.

Stapleton singled, Adkins walked, George singled and Darmon tripled to clear the bases. Curry walked, Murphy was hit by a pitch and Galloway had a two-run single.

The final four runs scored in the fifth.

Clay and Adkins were hit by pitches, George walked, Damron reached on an error for a run and Curry had a two-run single. Murphy doubled in the final run.

Hayden James pitched a five-inning one-hitter as he struck out four and did not walk a batter. The only hit was single by Patrick Bays in the third inning.

In the second game, the Dragons fell behind 6-0 in the first inning but battled back with two runs in the second.

Curry singled, Murphy reached on an error and Scheibelhood bunted to fill the bases. Galloway singled home a pair and Stapleton squeezed home the third run.

Fairland got within 7-5 in the third. George singled, stole second and Damron singled for an RBI. Damron then stole second and Murphy singled home the run.

West scored seven runs in the third to lead 14-5 but Fairland rallied with five runs in the fourth and five in the five.

In the fourth, Stapleton singled and Clay, Adkins and George all walked for a run. Damron doubled home two, Curry and Scheibelhood walked for a run and Galloway was hit by a pitch to score the fifth run.

The Dragons took the lead in the fifth.

Adkins and George singled and Damron doubled home both runners. Curry and Murphy walked, Scheibelhood singled in two and Galloway hit into a fielder’s choice to score Murphy.

Adkins – the fourth Fairland pitcher – got the win with Damron notching the save.

Fairland visits Ironton on Monday.
